BCI Prohibits Online Solicitation of Legal Services by Lawyers Following Madras HC Ruling

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has issued a press release following the Madras High Court's judgment dated July 3, 2024, emphasizing that the legal profession is a noble service to society and not a business driven by profit motives. The press release reminds lawyers to uphold high ethical standards and emphasizes that they should not advertise or offer legal services illegally on online platforms.

The BCI has directed all State Bar Councils to impose strict disciplinary actions on advocates who advertise or solicit work through online portals, which violates the Bar Council of India Rules. It has also instructed that disciplinary actions may involve suspending or removing advocates from the roll of advocates.

The BCI has sent cease and desist notices to major online service providers like Quikr India, Sulekha, Just Dial Limited, and Grotal. The BCI has instructed the bar councils to furnish a report on the measures undertaken by August 10.
