Newly Enacted Criminal Laws Replacing IPC, CrPC & Evidence Act To Come Into Force From July 1, 2024

The Union Government has notified on Saturday that three newly enacted criminal laws Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act respectively will come into effect from July 1, 2024.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (45 of 2023), the Central Government hereby appoints the 1st day of July, 2024 as the date on which the provisions of the said Sanhita, except the provision of sub-section (2) of section 106, shall come into force”, the Ministry of Home Affairs notification read.

Similarly, the dates for the other two criminal laws have been notified. The Central Government had introduced the Bills in the Lok Sabha on August 11, 2023.

These laws were passed by the Parliament on December 21, 2023. They received the assent of the President on December 25, 2023.
