Permanent Commission For Women In Army: Centre Seeks Six Months For Implementation, Supreme Court Allows A Month

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, gave one more month to the Centre to implement its February verdict that granted permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army.

The bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud, Indu Malhotra and KM Joseph said that the Centre will have to comply with all its directions given in its verdict. The top court’s direction came on an application filed by the Centre seeking six months' time for implementation of the verdict citing the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Supreme Court had in February said women should be considered for command roles and that all women officers are entitled to permanent commission rejecting the Centre's stand of their physiological limitations as being based on "sex stereotypes" and "gender discrimination against women".

At present, woman officers can serve in the army for 10 to 14 years in the Short Service Commission.

A permanent commission allows officers to serve in the army till they retire, unlike the Short Service Commission (SSC), which is for a specific period of 10 or 14 years.
