
On Friday (August 22, 2025), President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, leaving only the formal notification by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology before the nationwide ban on real money games (RMGs) takes effect.
The legislation moved at unprecedented speed, passing from Cabinet approval to clearance in both Houses of Parliament within just three days. In response, RMG companies announced plans to wind down their operations.
The legislation aims to address addiction, financial hardships, and social harm caused by predatory gaming platforms built on false promises of easy wealth. It underscores the Government’s commitment to protecting families while steering the digital economy toward safer and more constructive growth.
The unchecked rise of online money games has created serious risks for individuals and families, exploiting legal loopholes and causing social harm. In the Rajya Sabha, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said nearly 45 crore people lost over ₹20,000 crore, leading the Government to act to protect citizens.
