The Supreme Court on Monday reserved its order on a batch of petitions seeking restoration of 4G internet services in Jammu and Kashmir.
The internet services were suspended in Jammu and Kashmir in August last year after the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. While the 2G services on postpaid mobile phones and broadband have been restored, 4G services still remain suspended.
The pleas sought restoration of high-speed internet in the Jammu & Kashmir particularly to enable access to healthcare services and online education during COVID-19 lockdown.
Previously, the Jammu and Kashmir’s government had submitted a reply in response to the pleas to the court that the Internet access is not a fundamental right.
A bench comprising Justices N V Ramana, Surya Kant and B R Gavai heard the arguments from the government and petitioners side and reserved the order in this matter.
